Castle’s wines are made in a European style using old-world techniques such as small-batch, open-top fermentation, hand punch-downs 4 to 5 times each day, and using traditional basket bladder presses. Our wines are not over-extracted or over-oaked, and are considered very fruit driven which makes for great food pairings or enjoyed on their own. Our signature wines are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other small lot Rhone Varietals.
Our tasting room on the Sonoma plaza is open for visiting and small private events. Visitors are welcome to taste Castle’s award winning wines with our friendly staff in a cozy French bistro style setting. Weather permitting, wine tasting and private events are often held in our flower filled garden patio. In addition, throughout the warm months, the Castle Tasting Room takes part in many of the festivities and special weekend events which showcase the hospitality of Sonoma County. Castle also hosts several casual themed events which pair our excellent wine with traditional local food flavors while enjoying a Sonoma summer afternoon. Our excellent, hand crafted wines in a warm relaxed ambiance are paired to create an experience which we hope will remain with our visitors along with a passion for Castle wines. Many visitors join our wine society to remain connected to the wonderful feeling that they shared with us at the tasting room.
Castle Vineyards & Winery was acquired in 2006 by John and Kathleen Sweazey, who combine years of passionate wine interest and experience with their success in small business enterprises. Drawn to Castle because of the outstanding quality of the wine, the Sweazey’s vision is to enhance the Castle brand with greater production and national distribution. The focus on Pinot Noir remains consistent with the ideals of Vic McWilliams who founded Castle in the 1990s.
The Castle estate vineyard covers 16 acres in the Los Carneros appellation just north of San Francisco. We purchase the best grapes available from various Sonoma Valley growers, with whom we have long- term contractual relationships. By sourcing fruit from different vineyards throughout the valley, we are able to showcase the best and unique characteristics of each varietals we produce. Our winemaker remains involved with the growers in the development of the fruit from bud to harvest. Therefore, the vineyard that provided the fruit for the wine is usually designated on our label.
